Freemium vs Premium for WordPress Product Businesses

  1. A lot of work gets put into software products 01:28
    • It can be tough to put in all that work just to give a free product away.
    • While freemium is a good way to gain users, it can cause a few problems that you don’t get with the premium model.
    • For example, you spend a ton of money on support for customers who aren’t paying you.
    • Whereas if you run your business through the premium model, you have the money to pay for that customer support.
  2. The WordPress repository is pretty strict when it comes to user acquisition  03:39
    • It’s really hard to convert freemium customers to premium customers because the repository has very strict user acquisition rules.
  3. This isn’t to say that you shouldn’t give products away for free 05:23
    • You totally should give things away for free! Just not your main product.
    • Create lead magnets, add ons, tutorials, tools, and other content around your products.
  4. Premium products are better for the user 05:56
    • Tim would rather pay for a product because he believes he will get better support and features over time.
    • Free products sometimes (though not always) get abandoned and are not kept up-to-date.
